New Kitten or Puppy Veterinary Visit in Randolph

At American Animal Hospital, we treat every pet that walks through our doors like family. As your family veterinarian, it is important that we are a part of your pet’s life early on to ensure proper vaccinations are given as well as helping you through the training process. Making sure that your pet is getting the proper health care as it is essential to a long and happy life!

We should see your new puppy or kitten as soon as possible after bringing them home. We will thoroughly examine any records from the breeder, shelter, or another veterinarian to identify what your pet may need. We will perform a comprehensive physical exam to identify any possible health risks early on.

We extend our New Pet Exam to a double appointment time to make sure there is plenty of time to answer any questions or concerns regarding:

• Nutrition
• Vaccinations
• Dental care
• Behavioral issues
• Potty training

Remember, we are your family veterinarian and are here to help you and your pet in any way we can.

We suggest that prior to picking up your new family pet that you write down a list of questions. It is best to do so beforehand because when you see their cuddly face, you’ll just want to run out the door and get them home.

Questions you may want to ask:

• What have they been eating and how often?
• What, if any, vaccinations have they had?
• Have they had their stool tested for parasites?
• Have they been dewormed, if so, with what, and when?
• If a kitten, have they been tested for FELV/FIV?

What to bring your first visit:

• Start out your new puppy on a leash and kitten in a carrier.
• Bring any health information that the breeder or shelter has provided you with such as vaccinations and deworming.
• Fresh stool sample (less than 12 hours).

Your Initial Puppy Exam

Your initial puppy exam commonly consists of:

• A comprehensive physical exam
• Dispense flea/tick/heartworm preventive after discussing their environmental risks.
• Fecal examination which will check for internal parasites and deworm if necessary.
• Vaccination protocol plan for your pup. This will vary depending on your puppy’s potential exposures.
• Answer any questions you may have.
• Vaccinations followed by lots of treats.

Your Initial Kitten Exam

Your initial kitten exam commonly consists of:

• A comprehensive physical exam.
• FELV (Feline Leukemia Virus) FIV testing (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).
• Fecal examination and deworm if necessary.
• Discussion with you to decide on vaccination protocol that is tailored to your kitten’s anticipated exposure.
• Dispense flea/tick/heartworm preventive after discussing their environmental risks.
• Vaccinations followed by lots of treats.
